The cello is the second largest and second lowest of the String family. It is the only string instrument that is played between the player's legs. The Cello is the lowest instrument offered to beginners, and Cello players read notes in the Bass Clef. Although the Cello looks quite large, it can be sized just like all the other string instruments. Your string teacher can help measure you for an instrument that is the correct size for your body, and he or she can also let you know when it is time to move on to a bigger instrument.

Financial Information
Cello players typically rent their first instrument, and it is slightly more than the viola to rent. Like Violins and Violas, Cellos come in different sizes based on the size of the student. By high school, most students will have "graduated" to a standard Cello. The Music Shoppe, our local music supplier, has a rental program that allows students to upgrade when ready and to apply the rental toward the purchase of a new or used instrument when the time comes. Cello students must take great care in using their bows and their strings, as these parts are very delicate. Strings must be replaced occasionally and bows require occasional maintenance. Viola students will also need to purchase rosin and method books designated by the instructor.
