The trumpet is the smallest and highest of the brass instrument family. It has three piston valves. A sound is made by "buzzing" the lips into a mouthpiece, where it is amplified by brass tubing. A very close relative of the trumpet is the cornet, which shares everything except its shape. For beginners, these instruments, although different, are interchangeable.

Financial Information
The Trumpet is the least expensive of the brass instruments. Typically students rent for the first year or two, and then purchase an upgraded instrument. Students also generally upgrade mouthpieces ($60-$100) within the first year. Brass instruments can be maintained relatively inexpensively if great care is taken. Valves should be oiled daily, and students may use up to one bottle of valve oil per month (around $5). Trumpets should be taken to a reputable musical instrument repair shop once per year to be cleaned and adjusted. It is fairly difficult to receive a college scholarship for the trumpet.
