The violin, sometimes referred to as the fiddle, is the smallest and highest of the String instruments. Violins have four strings and are made entirely out of wood. They have a very delicate bridge and a fingerboard made of ebony or wood. Violins can come in a few different sizes, and they should be fitted to the student by a professional for optimum playing conditions. Your string teacher can help you find a correctly sized violin if you should choose to play. Violins can be played by both plucking and bowing. Bows are made out of wood or carbon fiber and tightly strung horsehair.

Financial Information
Violin players typically rent their first instrument, and it is the least expensive of the string instruments to rent. Often fifth grade students have room to grow and therefore will start with a 1/2 or 3/4 sized Violin. The Music Shoppe, our local music supplier, has a rental program that allows students to upgrade when ready and to apply the rental toward the purchase of a new or used instrument when the time comes. Violin students must take great care in using their bows and their strings, as these parts are very delicate. Strings must be replaced occasionally and bows require occasional maintenance. Violin students will also need to purchase rosin and method books designated by the instructor.
