The string family contains a very diverse group of instruments. String instruments can have any number of strings that are usually pulled tight so that they can be plucked or bowed to produce different pitches. They also usually have a large, open resonating body that is made out of wood or some other combination of materials. You might already be familiar with the guitar or the violin - those are the most widely recognized string instruments. Beginners in Unit 4 Schools can start on Violin, Viola, or Cello.
Strings can play in chamber ensembles. The most common chamber ensemble you might see is called a String Quartet. It typically uses two violins (seated on the left), a viola (seated in the center), and a cello (seated on the right). String quartets usually do not have a conductor; they use their body movements and eye contact to ensure that they are making music together.
The quartet you will see in the video to the right is called the "Pacifica Quartet," which is a professional quartet made up of music professors from the Indiana University. They are playing the Second Movement, Vivace, from Beethoven's String Quartet in F Major, Opus 135. |

Strings can play in string orchestras. Many orchestras include only string instruments. Usually there are many players in a string orchestra, and several people playing the same part. With a larger ensemble like this, a conductor typically leads the group by not only keeping them together, but also conveying musical ideas that the composer may have intended for the group to play.
You might notice in this video that the String Orchestra also includes the Double Bass (on the far left, standing). While we do not offer Double Bass to beginners, a few motivated and interested students may have the opportunity to learn the Double Bass at the Middle School, once their bodies and fingers are large enough to handle the instrument. |
Strings can play in symphony orchestras.A symphony orchestra is one of the largest musical ensembles you will see. The core of the symphony orchestra is the string instruments, much like the string orchestra. It can also include any number or combination of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, depending on the composer's desire. Often you will see orchestra personnel move to and from the stage or change instruments throughout a concert, because each piece is different.
This video showcases one of the world's finest symphony orchestras from the great state of Illinois, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. They are playing an excerpt from the Finale of Mahler's Symphony No. 6. |

Double Basses in a Concert Band

Strings can play in concert bands and jazz bands.String instruments, most often the Double Bass, are found in concert bands and jazz bands too! Our most dedicated and motivated string players may have the opportunity to play the Double Bass and/or Electric Bass in a Jazz Band in Middle School or High School. If you think the Double Bass might be for you, you should mention it to your string teacher so that you can work together to come up with a plan for beginning strings and learning the Double Bass.
